Utricularia Graminifolia, commonly shortened to UG, is a unique plant that belongs to the bladderwort family. Utricularia Graminifolia is a marginal plant and can be found growing along waterlines in the wild. This gives it the ability to thrive both fully submerged in an aquarium or emersed, provided sufficient humidity is provided. UG is known to be slightly temperamental making it suitable for hobbyists with more experience. Utricularia Graminifolia typically prefers a nutrient-poor substrate with soft water and low to medium lighting levels. If submerged in an aquarium, we recommend CO2 injection as well. UG is carnivorous and will feed on small insects or aquatic organisms depending on its environment. It should also be noted that UG is a tropical and does not go through any periods of dormancy.
If successful in keeping this plant, Utricularia Graminifolia is an excellent foreground choice and offers a lush appearance in both aquariums and terrarium-like setups. Many aquarists like to utilize the DSM Method for starting this plant off given the absence of a root system, but care should be taken to ensure there is proper air circulation to prevent mold growth. Overall, once established, Utricularia Graminifolia is fairly easy going and does not demand more than it gives.
